Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are being used on increasingly steep and high landfill slopes, which requires careful determination of the appropriate shear strength to be used in design. This paper reviews shear strength testing of GCLs, and the subsequent use of the strength data, from a design viewpoint.
