Typically flue gas systems are considered to be fired heaters or gas turbine exhaust streams. However, in the most general sense flue gas can be considered as the combustion products of a fuel, with the combustion taking place in a heat engine, a conventional fired device or some combination of both. A procedure, based on Pinch Technology, has been developed for screening the operating and capital costs of various flue gas options prior to detailed design. The procedure utilizes simple models of flue gas systems in combination with Balanced Composite Curves and Grand Composite Curves. As only a small number of decision variables are involved in the procedure it is easily extended to allow total cost (capital and energy) optimization.
