Currently air quality models are used to predict the pollutant dispersion from vehicular traffic on roadways. Four roadway dispersion models (CALINE-2, HIWAY, AIRPOL-4, and TRAPS IIM) were evaluated by using experimental mass flux profiles and mass conservation checks. The shapes of the predicted and experimental mass flux profiles agreed for only one model. Several current roadway dispersion models are shown to be inaccurate because they neglect change in wind speed with height and because they incorrectly represent transport processes when the wind angle to the roadway differs from 90/sup 0/.
