The government/industry partnerships that have evolved through the US Department of Energy`s Clean Coal Technology (CCT) Demonstration Program can serve as a model for future public-private cooperative efforts in technology development and demonstration. The CCT Program was established in 1985 to demonstrate, at commercial scale, advanced technologies that would allow the continued use of coal as a major domestic energy source while improving environmental performance over current technologies. The program has leveraged $2.7 billion of federal funds to design, build, and test advanced technologies at forty-five projects valued at nearly $7 billion. Many of the technologies demonstrated in the earlier stages of the program are beginning to enter the commercial marketplace, and the pace of market introduction is expected to accelerate in the early part of the 21st century.
