A series of 84 biomass sampling plots were established in 2 to 10-year-old black locust stands in order to determine total energy content and usable energy content of the above ground biomass. Average whole-tree heats of combustion ranged from 8600 to 8539 Btu/lb for 2 and 10-year-old stands, respectively. Average energy contents with the 2-year-old stands containing less energy than 10-year-old stands, 8357 and 8440 Btu/lb, respectively. Total energy contents were lowest in 2-year-old stands averaging 82.5 and 50.9 MBtu/ha for total above ground and woody biomass, respectively, while nine-year-old stands yielded the highest amount of energy upon combustion 655.3 and 576.9 MBtu/ha for above ground and woody biomass, respectively. Usable energy contents (total energy content minus energy losses attributed to combustion in a boiler system) ranged from 56.7 to 470.4 MBtu/ha for 2 to 10-year-old whole-tree biomass. Nine-year-old stands exhibited the highest usable heat content 483.4 MBtu/ha for whole-tree biomass and 432.8 MBtu/ha for woody biomass. Annual usable energy contents were again highest for the total and woody biomass of 9-year-old stands, 53.7 and 48.1 MBtu/ha, respectively.
