Title: Initial evaluation of some horticultural crops on eastern Kentucky mined land

Conference · · Univ. Ky., Off. Eng. Serv., (Bull.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5433335

Surface mining operations in eastern Kentucky result in new land potentially suitable for horticultural crops. Root sections of thorny blackberry cultivars (Darrow, Cheyenne, Cherokee and Comanche) were planted in unamended spoil in two separate studies. Growth and survival of all cultivars was quite good in this minimum management situation. Carpathian walnut seedlings also survived well (91.8%) and grew on unamended spoil when observed a year after planting. Further research on potential horticultural reclamation crops and cultural techniques is warranted.
