Effect of nonlinear random wave forces on the response history of offshore structures

Proper simulation and analysis of the response history of structures under loading induced by random wave fields require a careful consideration of factors such as the ratio of the drag component to the inertia component of wave loading, the ratio of the average zero up crossing period for the sea spectra to the significant periods of the structures, and the time step selected for simulating the time histories. The effect of the first two factors on the simulation and analysis of the response history and the statics of response is studied with the help of a SDDF model. For generating the hydrodynamic loading, the time histories of the sea surface and the water particle kinematics are simulated by a linear filtering technique which uses the Shift Register principle in generating the random numbers. The results indicate that the length of the time history required for the correct realization of the response spectra and the evaluation of the statics of response is considerably influenced by these two factors. They also influence the nature of the response spectra. The statistical analysis of the response (displacement) history reveals that the distribution of the extrema follows the Weibull Law and the distribution of the response follows Pearson's type II or type VII or type IV frequency distribution both in the inertia and the drag dominated regimes.
