An unconventional (deeper than 2500 ft (762 m)) steamflood pilot is being conducted in the upper members (T/sub 2/ and T/sub 3/) of the Temblor formation in the West Coalinga Field, Fresno County, California. The Temblor formation is a series of interbedded lenticular sands, the layers strike north-south and dip 15/sup 0/ to the east. An oil-water contact exists east of the field. This field has been producing since 1930, its present water saturation averages 48 percent, it contains a 14/sup 0/ API (972 kg/m/sup 3/) oil and its viscosity averages 135 cp (.135 Pa.s). A steamflood pilot comprising six producers and one injector was implemented in early 1982. The pilot is a five-acre (2 ha) inverted seven spot pattern and has been operating since January 19, 1982. As of November 30, 1982 the wells have recovered 40,300 bbl (6402 m/sup 3/) of oil at an average oil-steam ratio of 0.17. A numerical simulator has been utilized to ascertain sweep efficiencies, sensitivity to well spacing and location, and the effect of dip and selective steam injection. From these studies, and from the field response observed so far, it is evident that due to the stratification of the formation and the uneven capacity (Kh) of the production wells, and the two members (T/sub 2/ and T/sub 3/), the steam has partially swept the pattern. The up dip wells (31-12, and 31-13), west of the injection well have shown no response. The T/sub 3/ member which has higher capacity (Kh) than the T/sub 2/ member has captured 70 percent of the steam; and the wells that have responded have higher capacity than the ones with no response. The dip of the formation has had no significant effect on the sweep.
