Spectrophotometric studies have been made on the effects of traces of Zr(IV) (1 x 10/sup -5/, 1 x 10/sup -4/, and 1 x 10/sup -3/ mole/liter) on the radiation chemistry of Pu(IV) in ..gamma..-irradiated solutions of 30% TBP + n-dodecane with concentrations of Pu/sup (IV)/ (C/sub Pu//sup 0/ (IV) of 7.5 x 10/sup -3/ and 1.4 x 10/sup -2/ mole/liter at absorbed doses E/sub ..gamma../ from 2 x 10/sup 4/ to 4.5 x 10/sup 5/ Gy. The Zr(IV) in the Pu(IV) organic solutions prevents the formation of complexes of the latter with DBPA formed by the ..gamma.. radiolysis of TBP. The yields G/sub D/ of DBP complexes of Pu(IV) in the presence of Zr(IV) at concentrations C/sub Zr//sup 0/(IV) of 1 x 10/sup -5/, 1 x 10/sup -4/, and 1 x 10/sup -3/ mole/liter are 0.73 +/- 0.5, 0.5 +/- 0.5 and 0.35 +/- 0.5 molecule/100 eV correspondingly; in the absence of Zr(IV), the values of G for Pu(IV) concentrations from 7 x 10/sup -3/ to 1.4 x 10/sup -2/ mole/liter are 0.9 +/- 0.1 molecule/100 eV. Plutonium precipitates begin to form in the presence of Zr(IV) at higher E/sub ..gamma../ - E/sub ..gamma..//sup s/; at C/sub Pu//sup 0/(IV) of 7.5 x 10/sup -3/ mole/liter and c/sub Zr//sup 0/(IV) of 1 x 10/sup -5/, 1 x 10/sup -4/, and 1 x 10/sup -3/ mole/liter, the E/sub ..gamma../ are correspondingly 1.65 x 10/sup 5/, 1.7 x 10/sup 5/ Gy. At C/sub Pu//sup 0/(IV) = 1.1 x 10/sup -2/ mole/liter and C/sub Zr/(IV) = 3.3 x 10/sup -4/ mole/liter, E/sub ..gamma../ is 3.5 x 10/sup 5/ Gy, as against 2.5 x 10/sup 5/ Gy in the absence of Zr(IV). The results are discussed from the viewpoint of the interactions of Pu(IV) and Zr(IV) with DBPA and the solubility of the DBP complexes of these metals in the system composed of 30% TBP + n-dodecane.
