Landfill methane project saves $24K/year

Clackamas County in Oregon will save up to $24,000 in annual avoided fuel costs and sales of excess gas by using waste methane from a privately owned landfill to heat government buildings. The county will use gas that has been flared since the landfill owner installed a gas collection system to correct an odor problem and prevent fires. The owner is contributing 20% of the waste gas to compensate for the public nuisance. The county will recover its $80,000 pipeline investment within three years. Bio Gas Technology Inc. will buy the remainder of the methane from the owner and the excess from the county. The methane must undergo cleaning and compression as well as water removal before it is usable in the county's converted boilers.
