Relativistic effects in the electron band structure of Cu l brace 111 r brace
- College of Engineering and Applied Science, State University of New York, Stony Brook, New York 11794 (United States)
Angle-resolved photoemission from Cu{l brace}111{r brace} both with {ital s}-polarized and with 75%-{ital s}- + 25%-{ital p}-polarized light shows evidence for the lifting of degeneracies of the two occupied {Lambda}{sub 3} bands. The spin-orbit coupling leads to a splitting of the nonrelativistic upper {Lambda}{sub 3} band into {Lambda}{sub 6}{sup 3} and {Lambda}{sub 4,5}{sup 3} bands in the middle portion of the {Gamma}{Lambda}{ital L} line, and of the nonrelativistic lower {Lambda}{sub 3} band into {Lambda}{sub 6}{sup 3} and {Lambda}{sub 4,5}{sup 3} bands near the {Gamma} point along the {Gamma}{Lambda}{ital L} line. The critical points for the relativistic bands are measured to be {ital E}({Gamma}{sub 8}{sup +})={minus}2.90{plus minus}0.05 eV, {ital E}({Gamma}{sub 7}{sup +})={minus}3.45{plus minus}0.10 eV, and {ital E}({Gamma}{sub 8}{sup +})={minus}3.65{plus minus}0.05 eV, in good agreement with the results of self-consistent relativistic band-structure calculations done by Eckardt, Fritsche, and Noffke with a Slater-type {ital X}{alpha} potential and {alpha}=0.70.
