An evaluation of various phase change materials for storing solar heat and storage configurations is presented. The phase change materials studied include magnesium nitrate hexahydrate, urea-ammonium bromide eutectic, magnesium nitrate hexahydrate-ammonium nitrate eutectic, and calcium chloride hexahydrate. The melting points, thermal properties, costs and encapsulants for these materials are listed. The physical properties of various storage media were also reviewed and tested. Results of the study demonstrated that Glauber's salt had a higher capacity per weight or volume than the other phase change materials studied and magnesium nitrate hexahydrate-ammonium nitrate eutectic, calcium chloride hexahydrate, Glauber's salt and paraffin wax had potential for forced air systems.
