A 3-D multicomponent (3-D, 3-C) seismic survey was collected over the northeastern limit of Joffre field, Alberta by the Colorado School of Mines Reservoir Characterization Project. The focus of this survey is lithology and porosity discrimination within the upper Devonian, Nisku dolomite reservoir. Geologic studies of cores from this reservoir revealed depositional and diagenetic heterogeneities, which influence production. Compressional seismic data has failed to image the Nisku reservoir or the underlying productive Leduc reef within the survey. However, shear wave technology has characterized the spatial variability of lithology within this reservoir and imaged the productive reef. Velocity ratio (Vp/Vs) mapping of 3-D, 3-C seismic data is a powerful lithologic discrimination tool. In addition to showing spatial lithologic changes within the Cretaceous section, higher Vp/Vs ratios found over the productive Nisku reservoir correlate with porosity variations. The 3-D shear wave data also show spatial correlation of the S1 (fast) shear wave amplitudes with known reservoir properties. Significant lateral Nisku reservoir heterogeneities are depicted by these results. By incorporating results from this technology into the reservoir model, improved reservoir exploitation can be achieved.
