HY ultrastable zeolites with a framework Si/A1 ratio of about 8, prepared by F{sub 6}Si(NH{sub 4}){sub 2} and steam treatment, have been characterized by i.r. spectroscopy, and their catalytic activity and selectivity for gas oil cracking have been measured. Samples obtained by F{sub 6}Si(NH{sub 4}){sub 2} treatment present only two hydroxyl bands at 3557 (LF) and 3636 (HF) cm{sup {minus}1} in the i.r. spectrum, and very little Lewis acidity and very little extraframework aluminium. After further dealumination by deepbed calcination, two new hydroxyl bands at 3610-3620 and 3690-3700 cm{sup {minus}1} appear, and strong Lewis acidity is observed. The same bands and Lewis acidity are observed in the steam dealuminated zeolite. The comparison of the i.r. spectra and catalytic activity of these two samples with a third one, obtained by citric acid treatment of the steam dealuminated sample, leads us to conclude that there is more than one type of extraframework aluminium: one type is easily removable by mild acid treatment and is catalytically active for bottom conversion and selective for coke and gasoline, and the other, preponderant type, which is more difficult to remove. The relative proportion of the two types of extraframework aluminium is a function of the method of ultrastabilization of the zeolite and the zeolite treatment conditions.
