Tin-platinum bimetallic catalysts are widely used in reforming technologies and dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons. Despite the large amount of work done in the field of preparation and use of Sn-Pt/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalysts, there are still many questions to be answered: i.e., (i) in what forms (metallic or ionic) does tin exist on the surface of the support, (ii) how to stabilize the required forms of tin in these catalysts, or (iii) what is the role of different forms of tin in the improved catalytic performance and high activity maintenance For preparation of Sn-Pt/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalysts coimpregnation or subsequent impregnation techniques are generally used. The precursors of the active metals are H{sub 2}PtCl{sub 6} and SnCl{sub 2} or SnCl{sub 4}. Bimetallic tin-platinum complexes or a special anchoring technique were also used. It seems to us that only the anchoring technique can result in the formation of a given tin containing surface species, exclusively, however, even this technique cannot guarantee the exclusive formation of Sn-Pt bimetallic species with metal-metal interaction. In this study, we summarize our experimental data obtained in the preparation of different types of alumina supported tin-platinum catalysts. Our study is based on a new approach, i.e., on the use of different types of Controlled Surface Reactions (CSRs).
