Mechanical wraparound contacted cell for low cost space arrays

The paper presents the advantages, performance, reliability and cost of a mechanical wraparound contact on a large area solar cell. The wraparound contact consists of a silver ribbon laminated to the metallization on the back of a solar cell with an insulating acrylic-Kaptonacrylic sandwich and wrapped around the edge to the N+ metallization and welded. The wraparound contact can increase the cell cost by approximately 20%, which must be offset by the panel assembly savings.
