Magnetic behavior of transition metal substituted CeRh/sub 3/B/sub 2/: destabilization of the 4f moment

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5425293
CeRh/sub 3/B/sub 2/ is magnetically ordered with a low moment of 0.4 ..mu../sub B/ but an unusually high Curie temperature (T/sub C/) of 115/sup 0/K. Replacement of 10% Rh by Ru or Os (but not Ir) results in a sharp decrease in the 4f moment and T/sub C/. This behavior is thought to arise from the changes in the hybridization of the 4f electrons of Ce with 4d, 5d electrons of Rh, Ru, Os and Ir. At the other extreme, CeRu/sub 3/B/sub 2/ and CeOs/sub 3/B/sub 2/ exhibit superconductivity.
