Nanoclusters of Se, Rb-Se, and Cs-Se were incorporated in the supercages of Y zeolite. Anomalous x-ray scattering established that the Se clusters take the form of weakly interacting chains with a disordered structure similar to that of amorphous Se, while the Rb-Se and Cs-Se clusters contain Se{sup 2{minus}}{sub 2} Zintl ions as in crystalline and liquid bulk phases. The Raman spectra of the nanoclusters exhibit features found in the bulk disordered phases. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
