Anisotropies in the frustrated translational mode of CO chemisorbed on Cu(110) have been measured for the first time, with energies of 4.9meV in the {l_angle}1{bar 1}0{r_angle} directions and 3.1meV in the {l_angle}001{r_angle} directions. The measurements are made using a new time-of-flight ESDIAD (electron stimulated desorption ion angular distribution) method, permitting the resolution of bond directional effects and initial state lateral momentum effects in ESDIAD patterns. These measurements provide a more detailed understanding of the librational potential energy well shape than has been possible previously. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
