High coercivity, epitaxial Sm{endash}Co films with uniaxial in-plane anisotropy

Epitaxial Sm{endash}Co(1{bar 1}00) and (11{bar 2}0) films have been grown by magnetron sputtering onto Cr(211) and (100) buffer layers, respectively. The Sm{endash}Co(1{bar 1}00) films exhibit uniaxial in-plane anisotropies of {approx}20{endash}25T and room-temperature coercive fields that increase to 4.1T as the film thickness decreases to 75 {Angstrom}. The 3 T coercivities of the (11{bar 2}0) films are independent of thickness. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
