Three examples are presented where multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry is used to study photochemistry in clusters. In the first, NO{sup +}(N{sub 2}O{sub 3}){sub m} and NO{sub 2}{sup +}(N{sub 2}O{sub 3}){sub m} are made by 226nm multiphoton ionization of the clusters produced in an expansion of NO/CH{sub 4}/Ar with a trace of H{sub 2}O. Second, H{sub 3}O{sup +}(H{sub 2}O){sub n} and CH{sub 3}OH{sub 2}{sup +}(CH{sub 3}OH){sub n} are observed when sufficiently large clusters of NO(H{sub 2}O){sub m} and NO(CH{sub 3}OH){sub m} are ionized, suggesting laser initiation of intracluster charge transfer reactions in these systems. Thirdly, multiphoton ionization of mixed expansions of NO and Fe(CO){sub 5} leads to the production of (Fe){sub m}{sup +}, (Fe){sub m}{sup +}(CO){sub n}, Fe{sup +}(NO)(CO), Fe{sup +}NO, and FeO{sup +}. The mechanisms for formation of these species will be discussed and analogies drawn between intracluster and collisional chemistry. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
