Atmospheric transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to coastal sediments

Atmospheric transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to coastal sediments was further elucidated by analyses of atmospheric particulate and sediment samples. The results confirmed that polycyclic aromatics in the sediments are derived from combustion sources, that concentrations in sediment declined approximately logarithmically with distance from Boston for about 100 km, and reached a constant level at greater distances. The concentration profiles were consistent with the assumption that the polycyclic aromatics are delivered to near shore sites by runoff, with subsequent resuspension and transport of contaminated sediment.
