Apparatus for distilling oil shale

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5416254
An apparatus is described for extracting vaporizable matter from fragmentary solid material comprising an annular retort having its inner and outer walls mounted to provide for independent rotation of the walls on longitudinal axes which approach horizontal. Means are provided for rotating the annular walls of the retort. Means exterior to the retort are provided for maintaining the annular walls in a suitably heated condition. Means are provided for feeding the material to be treated into the rotating retort and at the same time excluding the entrance of air into the retort. Means are provided for receiving solid treated material delivered from the other end of the retort and at the same time substantially excluding air from the retort. A circumferential series of ledges carried by the outer annular wall of the retort at its inner side is provided for first lifting and then dropping the material being treated as it travels longitudinally through the retort. Means are provided for conducting away and conserving the vapors generated in the retort.
