Outlook for use of methanol as a transportation fuel

Book ·
OSTI ID:5415993
This report discusses methanol's potential for use in spark-ignition engines. Diesel engine applications are not discussed, because methanol's poor compression-ignition properties make it better suited for spark-ignition engines in the long term. The paper begins with a summary of the outlook for methanol as a transportation fuel and concludes by suggesting actions for the federal government to consider, as well as actions to avoid. The bulk of the paper is represented by more detailed attachments on: methanol capacity; gasoline-methanol blends; crude oil transportation fuel supplies; near-neat methanol efficiency and performance; cost of methanol from near new facilities; logistics, toxicity and emissions of near-neat methanol fuel.
