Scaling of magnesium silicates has been a problem in some of the Icelandic district heating systems. This kind of scaling is not encountered in heating systems utilizing geothermal water directly but occurs by heating and deaerating fresh water. The properties and causes of the scaling have been examined and the results are reported in the paper. Possible remedies for the problems have been tested and their effectiveness is discussed. It is concluded that even though there appears not to be any definite solution to the problem, it can be kept at a minimum by a design based on pilot plant tests.
