A set of design and operating equations for the biological treatment of phenol in the presence of low levels of thiocyanate, as observed in typical effluents from coal carbonization processes, is developed. Thiocyanate inhibits the biological oxidation of phenol. An equation giving sludge age in terms of thiocyanate concentration, temperature, and phenol concentration is presented.
