Plantations vs. power plants

Journal Article · · Am. Christmas Tree J.; (United States)

This study determines that the short-long syndrome on a Christmas tree crop, near the Mt. Storm power plant, was caused by acid rain. The plant emitted sulfur dioxide and other products of coal combustion such as fluorides and fly ash. The rain became more and more acid as it fell through the sulfur dioxide and other pollutants in the atmosphere prior to falling on the trees. The rains containing sulfuric acid, coupled with the gaseous and particulate forms of fluorides, cause most of the previously unexplained abnormalities (disease) of the Christmas trees.
