Chemical arms reduction and national security. Individual study project report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5413537
The United States has established a principal policy objective to negotiate and implement an effective and verifiable global ban on the development, production, storage, transfer, and use of chemical weapons. As a first step in this regard, the United States and the Soviet Union recently signed a bilateral agreement calling for the destruction of a major portion of their existing chemical weapon stockpiles starting in 1992, and for a halt in production of new chemical weapons. To achieve a verifiable global chemical weapons ban, the United States continues to actively participate in the 40-nation Conference on Disarmament which meets in Geneva. This study examines the status of U.S. efforts to establish a global arms reduction agreement.
