Early investigations led to fundamental research to study the kinetics of thermochemical transformations in coals and thus derive a mathematical model of the entire set of processes. An hypothesis was developed about the nature of thermochemical transformation processes in coals as a chain of successive and parallel reactions of the radical type, involving degradation of the macromolecules and interactional synthesis reactions between the newly liberated radicals and fragments of various complexities. Experimental investigations used traditional and modern techniques. Special attention was devoted to studying the kinetics of processs that take place when coals are heated to a wide range of temperatures, under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The results were used to formulate a general hypothesis of the stepwise nature of the observed phenomena, draw up a broad scheme of the reactions involved and calculate the kinetic factors for each stage in the process. These theoretical assumptions and experimentally established kinetic characteristics provide a basis for proposals on how to control the processes of coal caking an coke formation to improve the existing coking technology and develop new commercial processes, e.g. by increasing yield of mobile liquid products as the heating rate is increased, especially when carbonizing low-rank coals. Analysis of the kinetic model shows further that a larger yield of mobile liquid products should be obtained, by the thermal degradation of coarse rather than fine grains. The stepwise nature of these processes and the quantitative data on reaction rates and activation energies have provided a theoretical basis for new methods of coke production which have been under development, using continuous techniques with regulation by stages (formed coke, continuous bed carbonization).
