Overview of the central cormorant underwater Manifold Centre Project (1974-1983)

The Underwater Manifold Centre (UMC), installed in the Central Cormorant field of the North Sea in 1982, is an example of a development that extends frontiers in the area of subsea technology. This paper describes the history of the project and how the combined resources of Shell and Esso brought it to fruition. Topics discussed in the paper range from the project's terms of reference to installation of the UMC to present status of offshore activities and remaining work. It concludes with a broad summary of what the UMC experience has provided to both companies to date.
