Formation of ultrashort pulses in a CO/sub 2/ amplifier with a spatially bounded gain region

An investigation is reported of the influence of the transverse dimensions of the active medium on the amplification of an ultrashort pulse under diffraction divergence conditions in a CO/sub 2/ amplifier with a long interaction region.
