Refrigerator module, system and process

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5411667
A hermetically sealed, valve-free assembly containing helium 3 or other refrigerant is used in a refrigerator module including a refrigerant evaporator, a refrigerant condenser, and a refrigerant adsorption pump serially connected but thermally isolated, so that the refrigerant may pass from one element to another. A heater is provided for the adsorption pump. During operation, the adsorbing unit is heated to drive adsorbed refrigerant vapor to the condenser. Refrigeration occurs when the refrigerant is evaporated in the evaporator and simultaneously adsorbed in the adsorbing unit to decrease refrigerant vapor pressure. When connected to the cold plate of a helium 4 or other refrigerant cryostat, the resulting multistage refrigeration system gives improved and simplified operation in practice.
