The good, the bad, and the ugly: comparing high-speed computer systems

This paper reports the results of running a finite-difference elastic wave code on several high-speed computers, including mainframes, mainframes with vector facilities, mini-supercomputers, vector supercomputers, and vector multiprocessor mini-super and supercomputers. The numerical scheme used in the code is based on a dimensional splitting which leads in a natural way to efficient implementations on many parallel and vector systems. The results indicate that certain hardware and software features of these systems can affect overall performance if not considered by the code developer. 10 refs., 3 figs., 5 tabs.
