Prompt production of neutrinos by 400 GeV protons of tungsten: first results from Fermilab E613

Preliminary results from a measurement of the prompt nu/sub ..mu../ and anti nu/sub ..mu../ fluxes obtained in a beam dump experiment at Fermilab indicate that D anti D charmed particles are produced centrally with a cross section of approx. 20 ..mu..b per nucleon. The measured value of the flux of anti nu/sub ..mu../ is non zero and approximately equal to the nu/sub ..mu../ flux.
