The effects of Al and Ti on the glass forming ability (GFA) of Zr-Al-Cu and Zr-Ti-Al-Cu-Ni alloys were investigated by studying their solidification characteristics in comparison with those of the Xr-Cu and Zr-Al-Cu-Ni alloys. Al and Ti are the key components for the high GFA of the alloys. One of their effects is to decrease the diffusion coefficients of the alloy components and further the crystal growth rate. Al and Ti enhance the tendency of the alloys to form metastable supersaturated phases due to solute trapping under rapid solidification conditions. The rapid solidification characteristics and the microstructures can be used as one of the approaches to search for alloys of high GFA.
