Electrolysis of fused Li{sub 2}MoO{sub 4} at 850C resulted in the growth of large crystals of H{sub 0.23}Li{sub 1.68}Mo{sub 1.05}O{sub 3} at the anode. The composition of the crystals was determined by chemical analysis, thermogravimetry, and X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray structure analysis was carried out and confirmed that the crystals have the trigonal {alpha}-NaFeO{sub 2} structure type previously reported for Li{sub 2}MoO{sub 3}, but with evidence for a displacive superstructure. Magnetic susceptibility measurements down to 4.2 K show weak Curie-Weiss paramagnetism with {mu}{sub eff} = 0.35 {mu}{sub B}. This contrasts with the almost total absence of paramagnetism in stoichiometric Li{sub 2}MoO{sub 3} prepared by hydrogen reduction of Li{sub 2}MoO{sub 4}.
