Stimulated Cherenkov radiation beam monitor. Master's thesis

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5407397

It was suggested that many important characteristics of a bunched relativistic electron beam might be determined by monitoring the Cherenkov radiation produced as the beam passes through or very close to a dielectric medium. This report describes an effort to produce stimulated Cherenkov radiation (SCR) in a dielectric slab using a bunched beam of 100 MEV electrons from a linear accelerator. Although the method used displayed only limited success, the results were consistent with previous work and further confirmed the basic ideas regarding SCR production. In conjunction with the experimental work performed, an analysis was conducted concerning the manner in which various electron charge distributions which might be used to describe how the electron bunches affect the Cherenkov radiation emitted by the beam. In principle, the results imply that proper monitoring of the Cherenkov radiation from a beam should allow one to deduce the total bunch charge and charge distribution.
