New dimensions in fracture mechanics: fractals, scaling and deformation/damage metrics
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:5407105
Scaling relations for various fracture processes occurring on characteristic length scales ranging from atomic to sample size are developed in terms of the noninteger dimensionality of certain geometric forms known as fractals. Changes in the fractal dimensionality as J/sub Ic/ is approached are interpreted as measures of deformation or damage. Other features of fractals also provide measures of deformation or damage localization.
