Infrared studies of Pt and Pt-Re/alumina reforming catalysts were made to determine whether further information could be obtained on the formation of alloys or bimetallic clusters. Relationships with temperature-programmed desorption spectra were also investigated. Results, although providing only slight evidence for alloying did not show that simultaneous presence of platinum and rhenium can result in differences in the nature of the dispersed metal. The effects of preoxidation temperature showed that while Pt lost area, Re metal area increased.
