Thermodynamic stability of the gaseous molecules YIrC and YIrC/sub 2/ by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry
In the investigation of the yttrium-iridium-carbon system by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry, the gaseous molecules YIrC and YIrC/sub 2/ have been observed and their partial pressures measured as a function of temperature. The enthalpy, ..delta..H/sup 0//sub 0/, of the reaction Y(g) + Ir(g) + nC(graph) = YIrC/sub n/(g) (n = 1, 2) was evaluated by the third-law method as 287 +/- 20 and 258 +/- 17 kJ mol/sup -1/ for YIrC and YIrC/sub 2/, respectively. These values, combined with ancillary literature data, yield the atomization energies, ..delta..H/sub a//sup 0//sub 0/, as 999 +/- 25 and 1680 +/- 25 kJ mol/sup -1/, and the standard heats of formation, ..delta..H/sub f//sup 0//sub 298/, as 805 +/- 25 and 834 +/- 25 kJ mol/sup -1/ for the mono- and dicarbide, respectively.
