Two-stage injection reduces diesel cetane requirements
This article shows how dividing the total charge of a low-cetane-number fuel between a pilot and main injection can provide satisfactory medium-speed diesel operation at essentially no thermal efficiency cost. Staged injection of a medium-speed diesel engine with low-cetane-number fuels can provide means of using alternative fuels without requiring dual-fuel systems. Alternative fuel studies for medium-speed diesel engines have provided a variety of liquids of low and marginal cetane numbers. The feasibility of expanding the cetane-number tolerance of a laboratory EMD 567B medium-speed diesel engine via staged injection is examined. Methanol staged injection tests were found to be unsuccessful, using a 20:1 compression ratio in the same engine, but still may be feasible.
