Comparison of V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO (ANATASE) and V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/ (rutile): Promoting effect of the support

The interaction of V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ with TiO/sub 2/(anatase) and TiO/sub 2/(rutile) was examined with laser Raman spectroscopy and for the oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride. Laser Raman studies revealed that the interaction of V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ with the TiO/sub 2/(rutile) surface is weaker than the interaction of V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ with the TiO/sub 2/(anatase) surface. The much poorer selectivity observed for V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/(rutile) relative to V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/(anatase) for the oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride is thought to be related to the V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/ interactions.
