The nonlinear evolution of extraordinary waves near the electron cyclotron resonance is studied. Equations describing the nonlinear change in the wave polarization are derived, and their solutions are studied for the case of a monochromatic wave. These equations have three different solutions, corresponding to three wave polarizations. All three branches are unstable. The polarization instability gives rise to a quasisteady magnetic field.
