Tube crimping keeps reformers onstream
A method for crimping blocked, restricted, and leaking reformer catalyst tubes that need to be isolated from the reactor is presented. A crimping mechanism of two crimp blocks, two tensioning studs, and twin hydraulic cylinders is shown. A typical catalyst tube configuration is schematicized. A step by step method is then detailed. As a final step a vent pipe to cool the crimp blocks at the outlet pigtail ought to be added. Hangers and burners on the catalyst tube must be adjusted to maintain temperature. A double crimp with sealant injection between the crimps is another method touched upon. A special problem, where an operator wanted to have a tube removed from the reformer for metallurgical testing to determine the cause of erosion, is reviewed. The job was completed in one day without interrupting the reformer operation.
