The authors investigate the electrochemical oxidation of Am(III) in solution containing 1.3-2 M Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ at pH 9-12.1. It was established that at an anode potential greater than or equal to 0.9 V, Am(III) is entirely oxidized to Am(IV) if the pH of the solution does not exceed 10.1, and to Am(VI) at pH 11-12.1. Americium (VI) in carbonate solution at pH 11.25 is slowly reduced to Am(V) according to a first order reaction. At 25 degrees C the half-reduction time is equal to ca 14 h, and the activation energy of this reaction is equal to 63.8 kJ/mole.
