A study of inclusive hyperon production using a lead glass hodoscope

Measurements of inclusive hyperon production are difficult when the final state includes one or more photons. A study was made of {Lambda} {Sigma}{sup +}, {Xi}{sup {minus}}, and {Xi}{sup 0} hyperons produced with a 6 GeV/c K{sup {minus}} beam on a tungsten target using the Multiparticle Spectrometer at Brookhaven's AGS during experiment E751. Hyperons included in the study had a proton in the final state with momentum greater than 1.5 GeV/c. Measurement of {Sigma}{sup +} and {Xi}{sup 0} decays required the construction of a segmented lead glass hodoscope with lead glass lightpipes. New trigger electronics, Monte Carlo simulations, and reconstruction algorithms were designed to enable the measurement of photons in the lead glass with energy from 0.3 GeV to 3.0 GeV. The lead glass hodoscope was found to have resolution that varied from 10%/{radical}E FWHM at 3.0 GeV to 20%/{radical}E FWHM at 3.0 GeV. This resolution was consistent with other studies of lead glass with lightpipes. Differential cross sections were measured for the four hyperons. Total inclusive cross sections from 0 < x{sub F} < 1 were also measured. From 18153 {Lambda} events, {sigma}{sub f} = 1.04 {plus minus} .06 mb. From 4496 {Sigma}{sup +} events, {sigma}{sub f} = 0.42 {plus minus} .03 mb. From 583 {Xi}{sup {minus}} events, {sigma}{sub f} = 58 {plus minus} 4 {mu}b. From 120 {Xi}{sup 0} events, {sigma}{sub f} = 43 {plus minus} 5 mb. Differential distributions in p{sub T} were measured for the {Lambda}, {Sigma}{sup +}, and {Xi}{sup {minus}} events.
