Variations in hydraulic lift with diamond bits

The total pressure beneath natural diamond bits often exceeds 1000 psi. This results in a sizable lifting force on the bit face. The true bottomhole load between the bit and rock can be less than half of the weight-on-bit indicated at the surface. Hydraulic lift is a significant force that must be accounted for in both laboratory and field evaluations of diamond bits. A review of the literature showed that no convenient, reliable method had been developed for measuring or estimating hydraulic lift. Two practical methods for determining hydraulic lift were developed in a laboratory drilling study, and are described in this paper. The ''drill-off'' method is well-adapted for routine application at the rig site. The ''drilling'' method yields additional details about hydraulic lift under controlled laboratory conditions. Sizable differences in hydraulic lift with similar bits are explained. It is shown that each diamond bit may be characterized by its ''effective pump-off'' and ''apparent nozzle'' areas. These are design-related characteristics that may be determined from directly measurable drilling parameters. Variations in hydraulic lift may then be predicted under a wide range of conditions.
