Direct conversion of biomass to liquids by thermal processes

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5395329
Biomass is an important energy resource at present and offers excellent potential for increased energy impact in the future. This potential energy impact is expected to be met in part by liquid fuels derived from biomass. Liquid fuels are more energy dense than biomass itself and more closely match existing end-use patterns. In this paper, research sponsored by the US Department of Energy's Biomass Energy Technology Division, on the direct thermochemical conversion of biomass to liquid fuels is discussed. Both the conversion of biomass to a bio-crude oil and subsequent product upgrading to hydrocarbon-compatible fuels are addressed. 19 refs., 8 figs., 3 tabs.
