The purpose of this work is to present experimental data on the minimum size of burning aluminum particles needed to ignite methane/air and propane/air mixtures under room conditions and to compare this data with data for other metals from other experimenters. The energy liberated by the burning aluminum particles of minimum size is compared wth the minimum spark ignition energy of the gas mixture. The aluminum particle diameters are between 20 /mu/m and 80 /mu/m; the range of methane/air equivalence ratio is 0.5 to 1.36; and the range of propane/air equivalence ratio is 0.7 to 2.1. Data from this study and two previous studies verify that, among various metals, the minimum particle mass for ignition of the gas is inversely related to its heat of combustion. 15 refs.
