Columbia River Basin: using irrigation water for electricity

The Columbia Basin Irrigation Program, an extensive irrigation system in Washington State, is being developed as a hydropower system, as well. The water being diverted for agricultural purposes will also produce electricity for the cities of Seattle and Tacoma during the irrigation season, March through October. This development requires coordination among three irrigation districts and two city PUCs, and will eventually result in eight separate hydro sites.
